Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Visit the School safety page for updates. The department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts will also provide updates during this period.

This Australian Reading Hour, encourage your child to discover or rekindle their love of a good book. Take the time to learn, escape and relax on Thursday 19 September and read for one hour.

Get involved at home

Join in at home and read your child a bedtime story. Studies show that reading a bedtime story six days a week can give kids almost a year’s head start when they begin school. Reading has also been shown to develop empathy, promote critical thinking and help children find a sense of self.

Join in from the classroom

Bestselling children’s author and illustrator Matt Stanton will broadcast live to primary school children across the country from the Sydney Opera House on Tuesday 17 September. We invite schools to register for the livestream of this free event.

Stanton’s author talk is among more than 140 events happening across the country involving more than 50 authors.

Take the Book Swap Challenge

We all have favourite books that we come back to again and again.

To help celebrate Reading Hour take our Book Swap Challenge. We want students, teachers, staff and parents to try reading something new on the day. To get involved, simply pair up with someone and swap your favourite books.

Take a photo and tag it with #ReadingHour so we can see how you got involved.

Video – #ReadingHour authors talk about their favourite place to read

Duration: 0:38

Looking for a good spot to open a book? We asked authors Benjamin Law, Morris Gleitzman, Jacqueline Harvey and Mick Elliott about their favourite place to read.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Watch students ask an expert the tough questions about NAPLAN.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.

If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.

Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.

Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

For more information about the measles vaccination, visit NSW Health or consult your local doctor.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

For more information, check out the department’s pedestrian safety advice for students, parents and carers.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

Congratulations to Tyrone, Ruby-Belle, Addison and Rachel who represented our school with distinction at the Combined Schools' ANZAC Service at McCabe Park today. Special mention must go to Tyrone who did an excellent job of reciting The Ode for those in attendance. Thanks also to Mrs Di Noro who did a fabulous job making the wreath for our school leaders to present at the ceremony.

Stage 1 students and teachers have been learning about how we grow and change. Our Year 2 students and teachers went back in time this week and came to school dresssed in 19th century costumes. The students were involved in very traditional methods of teaching and also enjoyed playing games such as marbles and hopscotch.

Unfortunately due to the bad weather, we have had to postpone our Cross Country Gala Day to the last day of this term - Friday 12th April.

There may be some slight adjustments to the program for the day due to the large number of organisations involved. We will send a note home to parents next week explaining any changes.

We apologise for any inconvenience cause but the safety of our students is always our primary concern.

SRC and Sports House Captains Elections for 2013

Please note that there are a few minor changes to the school's policy for the election of SRC representatives and Sports House Captains in 2013 and beyond. The changes are as follows:

SRC representatives will be elected from each class in years 1-5.

Students may only be an SRC representative once in years 1-5.

Students may be elected as SRC President or Vice President in Yr 6 year whether they have been an SRC representative at any stage or not.

Students elected as sports captain or vice captain are not eligible to be an SRC representative in the same year.

Sports House Captains and Vice Captains will be elected on Friday 1st February. Students who wish to nominate for one of these positions will be reminded that this will make them ineligible to hold an SRC representative position in 2013.

We trust that these new changes will allow greater opportunity for a larger number of students to hold one of these important leadership positions at some time during their time at Keiraville Public School.

I am pleased to confirm to the Keiraville PS community that we will have an after school care facility operating at the school in 2013. Unfortunately, we won't be ready for the start of the new school year but we will get things up and running as soon as possible.

We are currently in the process of choosing the successful tender for the operation of the after school care centre and I will keep you up to date about this process as developments occur.

My apologies to those families who were hoping to use this facility from the beginning of the year. I will keep you updated about a possible start date over the coming weeks when the tender selection process is completed.

We are really looking forward to our new kindergarten students starting school on Monday 4th February! A reminder to parents that they need to bring their child in for their scheduled Best Start assessment between Wednesday 30th January and Friday 1st February. If you have forgotten your child's allocated time, please contact the school office on Tuesday 29th January and we can give it to you.

Also, don't forget that Mr Hailstone has organised a play date here at the school on Tuesday 22nd January from 10am - 11am. All of our new kindergarten students and their parents are welcome to join us for a morning of fun and games. This will be another great opportunity for the children and parents to get to know each other a little better.

We took several photos of our new kindergarten students during the kindergarten transition program and many of them are in the photo gallery for you to have a look at.

Presentation Day Assembly 2012

On December 10 students, staff and parents joined together to celebrate the outstanding achievements of our students at our annual Recognition of Student Effort (ROSE) Assembly. Awards presented included dux, citizenship, sports, creative arts and class awards.

We welcomed many special guests to our school for this important occasion, including Mr Ian Millard (School Education Director), Jacqueline Sedgewick (P&C President), Renatta Faulkner, Tracey Field and the family of Michelle Ward. It was also wonderful to have so many parents and extended family members join us for the morning.

This year we renamed the Creative Arts Award to 'The Maree Faulkner Memorial Award', in recognition of Maree's valuable contributions to the creative arts at Keiraville Public School over the years. It was a pleasure to welcome her daughter, Renatta to our school to assist with presenting this award.

This assembly certainly showcased the talent we have! The school choir performed a Christmas song capably conducted by Miss Corcoran and it certainly got everyone's feet tapping. Brittany Sands led the school in singing 'The Climb' which was simply superb and our incredibly talented Year 6 band students completed the assembly with a rousing rendition of Advance Australia Fair.

Special mention must be given to all students for their exceptional behaviour. Mr O'Connor and all staff were incredibly proud of your efforts.

Finally, congratulations to all students who were recognised at our Rose Assembly.

Numeracy Workshops and Disco

What a wonderful time our students had at the disco on Thursday 8th November! DJ Styx had everyone dancing the night away as he entertained us with his music and costume changes.

While the students were having a great time at the disco, our parents took the opportunity to find out more about how mathematics is taught in our school by attending the numeracy workshops in the library. Feedback from parents was really positive and the staff were happy to see both workshops really well attended by parents.

The teaching of mathematics in primary schools has changed a lot in recent years. This can make many parents feel unsure about how to help their child with maths at home. Please feel free to print and use some of the posters and teaching tips (below) used at our school during maths lessons. There's also a list of useful websites that your child may use at school or at home to assist their mathematical understandings. As always, if you have any concerns or questions see your child's classroom teacher.

Education Week Open Day!

This year for Education Week we will be holding an Open Day on Thursday 2nd August.

The day will begin with open classrooms from 10:15am - 10:55am. During this time, parents and friends are welcome to visit their child's classroom to see some of the great things that are happening. It is also a time when your child can show you their books and some of the work they have completed this year.

Following the open classroom session, parents and friends are welcome to stay and enjoy a picnic lunch with the children.

After lunch, the students will begin an interesting afternoon of activities across the school in mixed age groups. These 'Doing Things Together' activities will carry on for the remainder of the afternoon. Students will move around a range of activities and work together with students from different grades, having lots of fun along the way.

We hope that many of our parents and friends are able to join us for the open classroom session and lunch on Thursday to help us celebrate public education at our fabulous school.

Harmony Day Activities at Keiraville PS

Harmony Day was celebrated at our school on Wednesday 21st March. At Keiraville PS, we recognise the importance of teaching children the value of diversity within our school and across the wider community.

One of the ways we achieve this is focusing on Harmony Day each year and involving students in a range of activities where values of tolerance, acceptance and understanding of others are practised and discussed. Classes from kindergarten to year 6 were involved in a range of activities, some of which can be seen in the attachments below and in the photo gallery.

Please take some time to see how our students value diversity and celebrate harmony in our school community.

Kindergarten did some work with their senior buddies and talked about 'people from all around the world'. There are some photos in the gallery showing the work done in kindergarten.

1P and 3C did some work together. Click on this link 1P and 3C to see a poster representing some of the things they did.

1H created a creat video clip where they addressed the issue and importance of harmony. You can view this video below:

2/3V created some friendship webs. Click on this link 2/3V Friendship Webs to see some pictures of their work.

Students in 4Y identified with their own heritage and investigated the variety of religious beliefs within Australia. The students then worked on a class mosaic like the ones they saw in pictures of mosques from around the world. Click here 4Y mosaic to see their work.

4/5P did a variety of things on Harmony Day and published a newsletter page to tell us all about what they did. Click here 4/5P newsletter page to see a copy of the newsletter page.

5/6C used words to create art with the theme of harmony. Click here to see images of the art they created.

Finally 5/6D did a survey of the diversity in their class. Click here How diverse is our class? for the results. They also had a great soccer game with the kindergarten friends. Go to the gallery to see the photos.

A welcome message from your new principal

Welcome everyone to the beginning of the 2012 school year!

I am very excited about beginning my new role as principal of the Keiraville Public School community. On Friday, I had the pleasure of meeting with the staff for the School Development Day and I was very encouraged by the enthusiasm and energy among this wonderful group of professionals. I am really looking forward to meeting all the students this week and as many parents as possible over the coming weeks. Please come up, say hi and introduce yourself when you get a chance.

A little bit about me ...

Over the past 20 years I have had the pleasure of experiencing a number of school contexts. I have been principal at Towradgi Public School for the past 4 and a half years. Before that I was assistant principal at Tarrawanna and Farmborough Road schools. Before that I was a classroom teacher at Coledale and Engadine West schools. Teaching and school leadership is a profession I thoroughly enjoy and feel passionate about. I feel truly privileged to be given the opportunity to be principal of Keiraville Public School.

As our students return to school from tomorrow, my goals are to ensure that:

 your children feel safe and happy at school;

 our classrooms are settled, productive learning environments;

 all students work towards their academic potential;

 our children develop social skills that allow them to interact with others in a positive manner;

 staff are engaged in ongoing learning to provide relevant, appropriate and innovative teaching and learning experiences for students;

students, parents and staff work in partnership, and with mutual respect, for the benefit of all; and

we continually strive to make a great school even better.

I look forward to the challenges ahead and to meeting you all in the very near future.

Angus returned to school today as proud Captain of his State Basketball team.

They played in the National Basketball Championship in Darwin last week.

They won every game in their rounds except against Victoria.

In the FINALS they were unfortunately defeated by QLD who went on to win the GOLD medal.

The final score being: 46 - 43 so a close game and a loss of only 3 points.

Angus shot a 3 point goal to have the game tied in the last 20 seconds. With only 10 seconds to go QLD scored another 3 point goal. This left Angus with 3 seconds to shoot another 3 point goal from half court. It hit the ring but did not make it in.

A gallant effort from our Keiraville Captain. Well Done Angus and Congratulations to the team on winning SILVER!!!!
